Australia's youngest senator has suggested that Australians under 18 be allowed to vote in federal elections.

Parliament's electoral matters committee has opened an inquiry examining the Greens proposal to introduce voluntary voting for 16 and 17-year-olds and allowing electoral roll registration for those as young as 14.

The bill was proposed by 23-year-old senator Jordon Steele-John.
"I encourage all young people and youth-focused organisations to please contribute to the committee's deliberations on this important democratic reform," Senator Steele-John tweeted on Wednesday.

The proposed reform would also allow Australians to enrol to vote or update their details at polling centres on election day.

The committee is taking submissions and is expected to hand down its report in October.
