Female asylum seekers 'feel unsafe' in detention

The Christmas Island Shire president says some female asylum seekers have expressed fears for their safety while in detention.

The Christmas Island Shire president says some female asylum seekers have expressed fears for their safety while in detention.

It comes after the Australian Federal Police confirmed it is investigating allegations of sexual assault made by a female asylum seeker on the island.

Shire president Gordon Thomson says the alleged assault happened in one of five family compounds.

And he's told Santilla Chingaipe, the island's detention facilities, which currently house more than 2,000 people, are overcrowded.
