Fenninger takes World Cup lead with GS win

In what looks like a repeat of last season, Anna Fenninger of Austria is back in the overall lead of the World Cup standings after winning a giant slalom.

Austrian Anna Fenninger won the giant slalom in Are, Sweden on Friday to take the overall women's World Cup lead from Slovenian rival Tina Maze.

The reigning champion in the discipline dominated both runs, clocking 2min 24.20sec to finish 0.71sec ahead of Italy's Nadia Fanchini with Austrian Eva-Maria Brem third at 1.07sec.

Fenniger, 25, had arrived in Sweden trailing Olympic champion Maze by 44 points but surged ahead after the Slovenian trailed sixth after the first run and dropped to 20th after the second.

"To be on front in the overall is good but it's not done yet," said Fenninger after her 13th World Cup win achieved on Friday the 13th.

"Now I just want to savour my victory. I'm not superstitious. It's simply a beautiful day and I'm happy it finished like this."

Fenninger holds an 86-point advantage in the giant slalom standings on Brem and will be looking to defend her title during the season-ending World Cup finals in Meribel, France next week.

Maze, meanwhile, will be bidding to recapture her overall World Cup lead in Saturday's slalom in which Fenninger will not compete.
