Ferrer wins first round in Antwerp tennis

David Ferrer has enjoyed an opening round win in Antwerp but a bunch of other seeds have fallen at the first hurdle.

David Ferrer came through a third set tie-break to beat Italian qualifier Stefano Travaglia in the first round of the European Open in Antwerp.

Spaniard Ferrer, seeded fifth in Belgium, had to come from behind to advance courtesy of a 4-6 6-4 7-6 (7-3) success in a tournament which David Goffin, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Nick Kyrgios will all enter at the second-round phase.

Ferrer was the only seed to win on Tuesday as Pablo Cuevas, Benoit Paire and Alexandr Dolgopolov all exited at the first hurdle.

In a sign of just how far Bernard Tomic has fallen, his qualifying conqueror Aldin Setkic was easily dispatched by another qualifier, Kenny De Schepper, in the first round 6-2 6-1.

Kyrgios will play Belgian Ruben Bemelmans in his tournament opener on Wednesday night local time.
