Few still willing to pay for online news

A new international news survey shows only 11 per cent of Australians who read news online agreed to pay for it last year.

It's the challenge facing news organisations around the world, and Australia is no different.

Only 11 per cent of Australians who read news online agreed to pay for it last year.

The finding - which is on par with the United States - is contained in a new international report by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism.

The number paying or willing to pay for news remains low, it says, with Australia ranking fifth out of 12 surveyed countries.

The 11 per cent is compared with just six per cent in the United Kingdom and 14 per cent in Finland.

More than 60 per cent in Australia say they wouldn't be prepared to pay whatever the price.

The main source of news for the more than 2000 people surveyed earlier this year was online, ahead of television and newspapers, with Australia leading the way for smartphone use.

There is also a "significant overlap" between device use, with almost a fifth saying they used the computer, smartphone, and tablet in the past week. Almost one third shared a news story via email or social media.

A majority of Australians (53 per cent) don't trust "most news most of the time", but 39 per cent trust the news outlets they personally use, the report found.
