Field goal feats no accident: Cherry-Evans

Manly captain Daly Cherry-Evans is confident the Sea Eagles won't be relying on other results to claim a spot in this year's NRL finals series.

Manly captain Daly Cherry-Evans insists his game-winning, left-footed field goal was no accident and is ready to prove it by leading his team into this year's final series.

The eighth-placed Sea Eagles can book their ticket to September with a win over Penrith in their final game of the regular season on Saturday.

A loss would leave their fate in the hands of ninth-placed St George Illawarra's match against Canterbury on Sunday, however Cherry-Evans is confident it won't get to that point.

"We certainly won't be buying too much into the results, outside of what we can determine. We can only determine what happens on Saturday at 5.30pm," Cherry-Evans said.

"We'll be making sure that this playing group is investing their energy into producing a win. Ultimately whatever else happens shouldn't affect us."

After almost single-handedly keeping his team's premiership hopes alive against the Warriors last week, Cherry-Evans is keen to keep stepping up.

The Sea Eagles star nailed two field goals: first with a right-footer to send the game into golden point, and then a second to steal victory with his left.

Cherry-Evans admitted it was a moment he will relish for a long time, but refused suggestions the clutch moment was a fluke.

"I'd be lying if I said I didn't practise that sort of stuff. I do practise it," he said.

"Not necessarily the scenario we were in on the weekend, but I definitely put in a little bit of time throughout the whole season. It's very fortunate enough that it paid off for me on the weekend.

"It's going to be a moment that I probably won't forget too quickly. I do enjoy those moments, I enjoy the ball coming to me when the game is on the line.

"It'd be great to win games a bit easier but if that's the situation this week, next week or the next four weeks, I'm certainly going to continue to call for the ball and try and help this time win."

Teammate Blake Green believes Cherry-Evans' field goal heroics would be a finals asset.

"I'd be happy enough just to make sure I can strike it with the one foot every time but yeah, it's a great asset to have. Obviously it helps him on either side of the ruck," he said.

"It's less predictable to see where it's coming from."
