* WHAT HAS HAPPENED?

The United States has charged 14 soccer officials and marketing executives with racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering conspiracies.

* WHAT ARE THE ALLEGATIONS?

That over a 24-year period, those charged conspired to solicit and receive more than $US150 million ($A194 million) in bribes and kickbacks, in exchange for their support of marketing executives who agreed to make the illegal payments.

* WHERE WERE THE ARRESTS MADE?

Seven FIFA officials were arrested in Zurich, Switzerland, ahead of the FIFA congress and presidential election.

Jeffrey Webb (FIFA vice-president and executive committee member from the Cayman Islands); Eugenio Figueredo (FIFA vice-president and executive committee member from Uruguay); Eduardo Li (FIFA executive committee member-elect and Costa Rica Football Association president); Julio Rocha (FIFA development officer and president of the Nicaragua FA); Costas Takkas (attache to the CONCACAF president); Rafael Esquivel (CONMEBOL executive committee member and Venezuela FA president); Jose Maria Marin (former president of the Brazilian FA)

* WHAT IS AUSTRALIA'S INVOLVEMENT

No direct link. But Australia remains disappointment at its failed bid to host the 2022 World Cup, which received just one vote in a process unexpectedly won by Qatar.
