Football commentator Les Murray says the upcoming FIFA election should go ahead because it's the best chance to depose President Sepp Blatter, despite calls from the UEFA that it be postponed.
“I don't think FIFA's credibility will be restored unless Blatter goes. And the best chance of him being outvoted is if the elections stay where they are, because the story is still hot,” Murray said.
Blatter is hoping to secure his fifth term as FIFA's president at an election to be held on Friday.
“When Blatter was re-elected in 2011, amid much hullabaloo barely six months after the grubby exco vote that gave World Cup hosting rights to Russia and Qatar, he was given a wonderful opportunity and blew it. Already 75 at the time, it should have been his last term,” he said.
“By not seeking re-election in 2015 and having nothing to lose, he could have embarked on a major reform of FIFA, leaving a serious Blatter legacy.”
Earlier today, Independent senator Nick Xenophon called on the federal government to denounce Blatter and request a fresh vote for the 2022 World Cup.
"The beautiful game has been turned into an incredibly ugly business," he said.
"There needs to be action taken, but the first step is that we need to say that this is just outrageous."
