FIFA keeps Russia and Ukraine apart

Russia and The Ukraine have been kept apart in World Cup 2018 qualifier matches.

FIFA made a political decision after the draw to ensure Russia will not play neighbour Ukraine in World Cup qualifier matches.

The countries have clashed over Russia annexing the Crimea last year, and the conflict is ongoing in eastern Ukraine between government forces and pro-Russian separatists.

According to the draw, Russia and Ukraine were on course to play two friendlies in 2016 and 2017.

Russia, as host nation, has no competitive qualifying matches, which UEFA centrally markets to broadcasters on behalf of its member federations.

The teams and Russian broadcasters were set to fill their fixture list with friendlies against the five teams in Group I.
