Fifita content with Tonga RLWC choice

Australian-born Tonga prop Andrew Fifita says representing Mate Ma'a in this year's Rugby League World Cup was the cherry on top of his sporting career.

Andrew Fifita says he's ticked the final box of a trophy-laden rugby league career by representing Tonga in this year's World Cup.

The bullocking Cronulla Sharks prop - of part Tongan and Indigenous Australian heritage - has won almost everything to win in the 13-man game, from the 2013 World Cup with Australia to the NRL Premiership in 2016.

Only a State of Origin triumph remains on the New South Welshman's to-do list.

Yet for Fifita, a late Cup defection from Mal Meninga's Kangaroos to Mate Ma'a has provided him with a sense of satisfaction he wouldn't receive elsewhere.

He said pulling on the red jumper was an honour beyond measure.

"For myself and my goals, I've ticked pretty much every single box on what to achieve (now), to wear the Tonga jersey at the World Cup level, and it's a privilege," the 28-year-old Fifita told reporters.

"At the end of the day, to support my father's heritage and put the jersey on and represent Tonga, that was a massive achievement."

Armed with the likes of Fifita and Kiwi defectors Jason Taumalolo, Sio Siua Taukeiaho and Manu Ma'u, Tonga's pack is the envy of the World Cup.

They helped engineer a flawless pool-stage run with victories over Scotland and Samoa, as well as last week's historic 28-22 win over New Zealand.

They'll take on Lebanon in this weekend's quarter final in Christchurch.

In snubbing short-priced favourites Australia, Fifita turned down a potential $50,000 pay cheque for winning the World Cup, with Mate Ma'a players expected to take home just $3000 for their Cup participation.

But for Fifita, it was all worth it.

He didn't rule out Tonga making the Cup pointy end.

"I'm half-half, represented Australia and love representing Australia, it's where I grew up, where my family is, where my whole family's from," Fifita said.

"When you get that green and gold jersey, it's a massive achievement, the pinnacle of our game - and then there's the other side.

"After visiting family a couple years back, I knew what the right thing to do was - it was playing around in my head but it just took the courage to stand up."
