Papua New Guinea police have charged dozens of men over the alleged decapitation of at least one person in the province bordering Australia’s Torres Strait.
Western Province police commander Silva Sika said the men have been transported to the region capital Daru and been charged with wilful murder.
“Only one person (has been decapitated), though some say two,” commander Sika told SBS World News.
“The case is still being investigated and there are more than 50 men in the holding cells but they have yet to be interviewed.”
Weapons were also seized in the joint police and military operation along the Fly River.
Commander Sika confirmed some of the suspects are from Damera village but declined to comment further on the case.
