Australia have gone down 3-1 to hosts Brazil in their opening round World League volleyball clash in Sao Bernardo do Campo, but put up a staunch fight against the world No.1 side.

After Brazil won the opening set 25-20, the Volleyroos silenced the crowd in the second by racing to a 16-11 lead, before eventually taking the set 25-21.

Shaken by the fightback, Brazil launched a defence with a difference in the final two sets, and put up 25-19 and 25-18 scorelines.

The usually dominating Australia captain, Tom Edgar, had a quiet night for him, finishing with just 13 points, while Jake Guymer finished with nine.

Australia and Brazil meet again on Sunday night (AEST).
