The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that Mr Bainimarama and a delegation are interested in making a private visit to Australia ahead of the 17 September Fiji elections - but has not confirmed an arrival date.

Fiji's High Commission in Australia says it hasn't been notified of when the prime minister will arrive and a spokesman from Mr Bainimarama's political party - Fiji First - also isn't willing to disclose his itinerary at this stage.

Australia lifted all travel restrictions on Fiji in March, including those applying to the prime minister.

Professor Robbie Robertson - who has worked in Fiji with the Ministry of Women, Social Welfare and Poverty Alleviation - and is currently the Dean of Arts at Swinburne University has told Abby Dinham campaigning to expats isn't a new thing.
