A deep earthquake off Fiji is unlikely to have any effect on the surface, Geoscience Australia says.

GA says the 6.2 magnitude quake hit at a depth of 585km, east northeast of Ndoi Island, at 7.28am on Monday.

"Earthquakes of this magnitude are not at all unusual in that part of the world, and it was very, very deep so it's something unlikely to have any impact on the surface," a GA spokesman told AAP.
