Fiji's gold medal-winning rugby sevens team has won an Association of National Olympic Committees award.

Fiji's gold medal-winning rugby sevens side have won the best men's team at the Association of National Olympic Committees awards for their performance in Rio.

Days after missing out in the best team category at the World Rugby awards, Fiji claimed the prize at a ceremony in Doha after winning the nation's first Olympic medal in Brazil.

The best women's team went to Great Britain's champion hockey side.

South African 400-metre gold medallist Wayde van Niekerk and women's tennis champion Monica Puig also received global awards on Tuesday.

Van Niekerk won best male athlete of the games and Puig for best female athlete.

The South African, running in lane eight, won the 400 in a world-record time of 43.03 seconds, breaking Michael Johnson's 17-year-old mark of 43.18.

Puig beat Angelique Kerber in the women's tennis final to win Puerto Rico's first Olympic gold medal.

Brazil's Rafaela Silva, who grew up in a Rio slum and won a gold medal in judo at the games, took the award for most inspirational performance.
