Now 21, he's about to head off to next month's World Championships in Canada.

Chris Remkes' goal is simple when he goes to next month's World Championships in Montreal.

Bringing more glory to his adopted country.

2017 began well for him, winning a gold medal at the world cup event in Baku, Azerbaijan.

"Getting my first taste of medals overseas is definitely a start and just trying to build up those skills and the quality of those skills, I think I'm slowly getting to where I would like to be."

Remkes was raised in Adelaide alongside a younger brother and sister and there's a very real opportunity his entire family might see him compete at next year's Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

It would be one of his career highlights.

"It would mean the world to just represent my country here on home soil so just to see friends and family up in the crowd, it would be absolutely amazing."

Although Adelaide will always be where he grew up, his home now is definitely at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.

"When I moved here, I actually finished off my year 12 here so I have made some friends at school. And I work as well, so I do a bit of coaching at a local club, so I've made work friends there as well which is nice."

The group he trains with and hangs out with has become more like a band of brothers than teammates.

"Because we've trained all together for a very long time, you know what each of us are like. And we know if something is wrong with them, we're we're going to be there supporting each other and pushing each other to the limits, type of thing, so it's a very supportive environment."

But despite all the hard training, he will one day find time to reconnect with his Filipino background.

"I think I'm 100 per cent Aussie. Yeah, I mean I would love to learn more about the Philippines, my culture, and maybe some more background about my birth, biological family, but it will come eventually."

But next month's World championships are his next goal.

And if he keeps on his current trajectory, his gymnastics career could yet reach new heights.
