The International Swimming Federation has removed age and term limits for its most senior officials, enabling Julio Maglione to run for a third term as president.
Delegates from 139 of more than 200 member states voted by majority for the moves Thursday at the FINA congress in Kazan, where the world championships open Friday.
Maglione, of Uruguay, will be 81 when he is expected to win another four-year term in 2017.
The rule had prevented anyone older than 80 in the FINA Bureau from being elected.
Also approved was a rule stating that the president, first vice president and honorary treasurer may be elected for a maximum three terms in the same post.
Also, Husain Al Mussallam of Kuwait was elected to the new position of first vice president.
