WORLD FINANCE UPDATE:

The Australian dollar is lower with markets in a risk averse mood in the lead up to major central bank announcements this week in the US, Japan and the EU.

At 0700 AEST on Tuesday, the local unit was trading at 73.88 US cents, down from 74.14 cents on Friday.

And the Australian market looks set to open lower following a stumble on Wall Street as tech stalwarts dragged on indexes and investors braced for major economic and political events in the US and Europe.

At 0645 AEST on Friday, the share price index was down 41 points at 5,218.

ELSEWHERE:

NEW YORK - Microsoft Corp has agreed to buy LinkedIn Corp for $US26.2 billion ($A35.5 billion) in its biggest-ever deal, combining the software giant's fast-growing cloud services business with the world's largest online network for professionals.

LONDON - British support for leaving the European Union stood at 46 percent, ahead of the 39 percent who want to remain part of the bloc, according to a YouGov poll for The Times published on Monday.

BEIJING - Growth in China's fixed-asset investment slipped below 10 per cent for the first time since 2000 in January-May as a boost from record credit growth seemed to be quickly fading, putting expectations of further stimulus back on the table.

GENEVA - The UN refugee agency says it expects 248,000 refugees and migrants to arrive in Europe via the Eastern Mediterranean this year, far lower than the "up to one million" it foresaw at the start of the year.

HELSINKI - Nokia says it has signed a 1.36-billion-euro ($A2.07 billion) framework deal with China Mobile to provide the operator with infrastructure and equipment for operating a cloud network.
