WORLD FINANCE UPDATE:

The Australian dollar has followed global sharemarkets higher ahead of the US Federal Reserve meeting this week.

At 0630 AEST on Tuesday, the local currency was trading at 78.53 US cents, up from 78.06 cents on Monday.

And the Australian share market looks set to open flat after Wall Street fell as investors awaited Apple earnings results and a Federal Reserve policy meeting.

At 0645 AEST on Tuesday, the June share price index futures contract was up five points at 5,977.

ELSEWHERE:

ATHENS - Greece's hard-left government has reshuffled its team of officials handling critical debt talks with EU-IMF creditors after making little progress in the last two months.

PARIS - The number of unemployed in France hit a new record in March at 3.51 million people, up 0.4 per cent from February.

TOKYO - Fitch has cut its credit rating on heavily indebted Japan by one notch, saying the country has not done enough to plug a budget gap left by its decision to delay a sales tax rise.

BEIJING - The general manager of China's largest oil refiner, Sinopec, has been placed under criminal investigation amid an ongoing crackdown on corruption.

LONDON - The British government has warned oil giant BP that it would oppose a foreign takeover of the company weakened in recent years by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, media reports say.

NEW YORK - Mylan NV has rejected Teva Pharmaceuticals' $US40.1 billion ($A51.3 billion) buyout offer, saying the cash-and-stock proposal undervalues the company.

NEW YORK - Apple's first-quarter profit jumped 33 per cent from a year ago, lifted by sales of 61 million iPhones in the first three months of the year.

TOKYO - Japanese camera and office equipment maker Canon says its profits fell nearly 29% in the three months to March, due to reduced demand for cameras.

NEW YORK - The home of the Whopper has enjoyed its biggest sales jump in nearly a decade during the first quarter, boosted by a new flavour of its signature burger and a popular 2 for $5 promotion.

SAN FRANCISCO - Google is setting up an online marketplace for those who want to sell patents to the internet giant.
