WORLD FINANCE UPDATE:

The Australian dollar is higher after Wall Street stocks ended a week-long slide.

At 0630 AEST on Tuesday, the local unit was trading at 93.33 US cents, up from 93.15 cents on Monday.

And the Australian share market looks set to open flat after Wall Street regained some of the ground US markets lost last week.

At 0645 AEST on Tuesday, the September share price index futures contract was up three points at 5,487.

ELSEWHERE:

BUENOS AIRES - Argentina will ask the US markets watchdog to probe two hedge funds in a $US1.3 billion ($A1.41 billion) debt battle that plunged the country into its second default since 2001.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission has cleared German engineering giant Siemens' 950 million-euro ($A1.37 billion) acquisition of some of Rolls-Royce's specialist gas turbine operations.

NEW YORK - McDonald's says a recent scandal over expired meat from a Chinese food supplier has had a "significant negative impact" on sales in China, Japan and some other markets.

WASHINGTON - General Electric has announced $US2 billion ($A2.16 billion) in new investments in Africa through 2018, as Washington kicks off the US-Africa Summit aimed at boosting commercial relations.

LONDON - Banking giant HSBC says profits fell in the first half because one-off gains were not repeated and after a weaker showing at its investment arm.
