WORLD FINANCE UPDATE:

The Australian dollar is higher following weak US economic data.

At 0630 AEDT on Thursday, the local currency was trading at 87.90 US cents, up from 87.31 cents on Wednesday.

And the Australian share market looks set to open lower following substantial falls on international markets as investors take fright at new US data underscoring the fragile state of the global economy.

At 0645 AEDT on Thursday, the December share price index futures contract was down 30 points at 5,193.

NEW YORK, Oct 15 AFP - US stocks have finished a turbulent day lower, rallying somewhat from a huge midday drop spurred by worries over global economic weakness and the spread of the Ebola virus.

LONDON - Europe's main stock markets have plunged at the close, with London's benchmark FTSE 100 index falling 2.83 per cent to end the day at 6,211.64 points.

WASHINGTON - The US economy is growing at about the same modest pace it has maintained in recent months, according to the Federal Reserve's Beige Book report.
