Finance News Update, what you need to know

WORLD FINANCE UPDATE:

The Australian dollar has risen above 93 US cents following positive economic figures out of China and weaker data out of the US.

At 0630 AEST on Thursday, the local currency was trading at 93.08 US cents, up from 92.95 cents on Wednesday.

And the Australian share market looks set to open higher after Wall Street rose despite a lacklustre US retail sales report and some disappointing earnings announcements.

At 0645 AEST on Thursday, the September share price index futures contract was up 25 points at 5,483.

ELSEWHERE:

WASHINGTON - US retail sales stalled in July after five months of gains, as consumers pulled back spending on autos and general goods, the Commerce Department says.

ATHENS - The long-running Greek recession is easing, official data showed.

MADRID - Spain has seen the steepest slide in consumer prices in nearly five years, a potentially worrying development as the eurozone fends off the threat of a deflationary spiral.

LONDON - Britain's unemployment rate fell to 6.4 per cent in the quarter to the end of June, hitting the lowest level for more than five years, official data showed.

MOSCOW - Data released by Russia's state-controlled Gazprom show it has increased exports to Europe despite EU efforts to reduce the bloc's dependence on Moscow.

NEW DELHI - Tata Motors' net profit more than tripled in the first quarter, the Indian giant says, driven by soaring sales of its British luxury marque Jaguar Land Rover.

MOLINE, Illinois - Deere's third-quarter profit has fallen 15 per cent and the farming equipment maker thinks the same weak sales in the US, Canada and abroad will cut into earnings for the year.
