WORLD FINANCE UPDATE:

The Australian dollar is rallying on the back of another oil price surge.

At 0630 AEST on Thursday, the local unit was trading at 73.78 US cents, up from 73.52 cents on Wednesday.

And the Australian share market looks set to open lower after Wall Street fell with the Dow Jones industrial average suffering its worst day since February as feeble quarterly reports undermined confidence across the consumer sector.

At 0645 AEST on Thursday, the share price futures index was down 34 points at 5,326.

ELSEWHERE:

CALGARY, Alberta - Workers for one of the largest oil sands companies affected by a massive wildfire in Canada are set to return to the shuttered facilities.

TOKYO - Nissan Motor Co is in advanced talks to take a roughly one-third stake in Mitsubishi Motors Corp with a $US1.8 billion ($A2.44 billion) investment, as Mitsubishi struggles with a fuel-economy data scandal, two people familiar with the matter say.

LONDON - Chelsea and sportswear giant Adidas will terminate their long-standing partnership at the end of the 2016-17 season, six years earlier than originally planned.

FRANKFURT - Volkswagen's board of directors has recommended shareholders formally approve the work of the company's top management team for last year despite the scandal over cars rigged to cheat on U.S. diesel emissions tests.

LONDON - Groups campaigning for Britain to leave the EU have raised STG8.2 million ($A16.08 million), more than the rival "In" campaign, according to figures which show the role of big business in the battle.

WASHINGTON - Public sector corruption siphons $US1.5 trillion to $US2 trillion ($A2.04 trillion to $A2.72 trillion) annually from the global economy in bribes and costs far more in stunted economic growth, lost tax revenues and sustained poverty, the International Monetary Fund says.
