WORLD FINANCE UPDATE:

The Australian dollar has dipped ahead of the Reserve Bank's monetary policy announcement.

At 0630 AEST on Tuesday, the currency was trading at 72.80 US cents, down from 72.99 cents on Monday.

And the Australian share market looks set to open flat after Wall Street fell following a big drop in oil prices.

At 0645 AEST on Tuesday, the September share price index futures contract was down one point at 5,612.

ELSEWHERE:

ATHENS - Greece's stock exchange has taken a historic beating as trading resumed after a five-week shutdown forced by capital controls, with the main index registering its greatest-ever drop drop of 16.23 per cent and bank shares particularly hard hit.

WASHINGTON - US consumer spending in June rose by the smallest amount in four months as shoppers cut back on purchases of cars and other big-ticket items.

LONDON - A trader who worked for UBS and Citigroup has become the first person to be convicted by a jury in Britain of rigging the benchmark Libor inter-bank lending rate.

NEW YORK - Automakers reported strong US sales in July, boosted by sport utility vehicles, as the industry benefited again from lower petrol prices and a steadily improving US economy.

BUCHAREST - Romanian authorities have charged Russian oil producer Lukoil with complicity in money laundering worth 1.77 billion euros ($A2.66 billion).

ISLAMABAD - The construction of a $US10 billion ($A13.74 billion) gas pipeline stretching from Central to South Asia is set to begin in December, Pakistani officials said on Monday after meeting with a delegation from Turkmenistan.

FRANKFURT - German car makers BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz have teamed up to buy digital mapping service HERE for 2.8 billion euros ($A4.21 billion) from Nokia, the Finnish telecoms group says.

ROME - Italian-based investment company Exor, controlled by the Agnelli family, says it's struck a $US6.9 billion ($A9.48 billion) deal to buy reinsurer PartnerRe.
