WORLD FINANCE UPDATE:

The Australian dollar is higher, getting support from the release of positive local business confidence figures.

At 0700 AEST on Wednesday, the local unit was trading at 93.73 US cents, up from 93.65 cents on Tuesday.

And the share market is set for a flat start to trade after a quiet session on Wall Street, due to a lack of major economic or company news.

At 0700 AEST on Wednesday, the March share price index futures contract was two points higher at 5,479.

ELSEWHERE:

PARIS - Emerging economies China, Russia and Brazil are showing signs of slowing down but advanced economies are growing steadily, the OECD says.

WASHINGTON - A federal appeals court says Wells Fargo cannot avoid new allegations of misconduct stemming from the mortgage crisis even though the bank has already paid $US5 billion in a national settlement between the government and financial institutions.

PRETORIA - The South African government and its central bank chief have warned that strike-hit platinum mines could close, throwing miners out of work and rocking an already shaky economy.

BRUSSELS - The EU has warned the Philippines, one of the world's largest fishing nations, and Papua New Guinea that they face an import ban if they do not curb illegal fishing.
