Finance officials to face senators

Officials from the Department of Finance will take to the stand in the latest round of Senate budget estimates hearings.

Maintaining a high level of confidence will be crucial in supporting economic growth as the Abbott government tries to get the budget back in order.

However, recent gauges of sentiment suggest the coalition has work to do to lift the mood of Australians.

The latest weekly ANZ-Roy Morgan consumer confidence gauge is due on Tuesday.

Last week it fell a further 1.7 per cent to its lowest level since early August 2014.

Officials from the Department of Finance will face a Senate estimates hearing in Canberra on Tuesday, providing opposition parties the opportunity to trawl over government policy in the run-up to the May budget.
