Aaron Finch is finding it tough to be frozen out of Australia's Twenty20 side but Glenn Maxwell says his close friend understands the situation.
Finch occupies top spot on the International Cricket Council's T20 batting rankings and holds the record for the highest score in the format.
But the former skipper has been running drinks at the World T20 instead of bludgeoning attacks.
It has as much to do with the form of Usman Khawaja and the bowling skills of Shane Watson as it does Finch.
"It's incredibly difficult for him," Maxwell told AAP.
"He's dealt with it amazingly well. Everyone can see the situation, everyone understands the situation and everyone feels for Aaron.
"It's a really tough one for everyone to deal with."
Khawaja has top-scored in Australia's two games at the event so far, guaranteeing he won't be dropped.
Watson is yet to post a big score but has starred with the new ball in both matches and will stay in the XI throughout the tournament.
"To have Aaron on the bench is, I wouldn't say bemusing because you look at the two guys opening the batting," Maxwell said.
"One is probably the world's best allrounder and made a hundred recently in a T20 international and the other is the most in-form player in Australia.
"So there's not a whole lot you can do. It's just one of those things where he has to wait."
Coach Darren Lehmann and skipper Steve Smith have preached a 'horses for courses' mantra throughout the World T20.
Maxwell suggested Finch could easily return at any point over the next week.
"If there's a team that matches Aaron better than some other batter in our line-up, I'm sure he'll be straight in and he'll be performing well," the offspinning allrounder said.
"Because you don't get a record like he does without being that good a player."
David Warner noted his long-term partner at the top of the ODI and T20 order was extremely disappointed.
"I've spoken to him a couple of times about it and it's quite tough," Warner said.
"I know he's disappointed but his career definitely isn't over, far from it."
Australia's World T20 campaign continues on Friday, when they face Pakistan in Chandigarh.
