Aaron Finch's Indian Premier League season could be over after the Mumbai Indians opener sustained a hamstring injury during their loss to the Rajasthan Royals.

Finch was forced from the field on Tuesday (Wednesday AEST), pulling up sharply and clutching at his left hamstring after stretching for the crease on a quick single.

The Victorian batsman spent time on the ground grimacing while being attended to by team staff, before being helped from the field to retire hurt on 10.

He will reportedly go for scans to determine the extent of the damage.

Even if deemed serious, Finch will have ample recovery time with no one-day internationals on the horizon, and having not been named in the Australian Test squad for June's West Indies tour and The Ashes in England from July.

The Australian T20 captain has been in a battle to shake a recent form slump.

A member of the World Cup-winning side last month, his largest contribution was a match-winning 121 against England on the opening day.

He also clocked a crucial 81 in the semi-final against India.

Finch's injury prompted a sympathetic tweet from Australian teammate, and good friend, Glenn Maxwell.

"Feeling for my mate @AaronFinch5 right now! Just as he was starting to look comfortable at the crease again. Have a speedy recovery mate!" Maxwell said.

His sister Jess Finch also tweeted her concern for her sibling.

"Feeling for @AaronFinch5 hopefully we can get some good news," she wrote.
