Finch puts hand up for ODI loss

Aaron Finch says it's on him, and the other batsmen in Australia's top order, to take the game away from England in Friday's ODI at the Gabba.

He scored a hundred in the first one-day international, but Aaron Finch is still blaming himself for the side's series-opening loss to England.

Finch's 107 fuelled Australia's total of 304 at the MCG before England made light of what was a record-breaking chase on the back of Jason Roy's breathtaking 180.

Ahead of Friday's second game at the Gabba, Finch said there was no doubt he was to blame for Australia not pushing towards a more impenetrable total of 350.

"That was a pretty crucial time I got out followed by Mitch Marsh.

"It's something we've talked about a lot over the last 18 months, having set guys go into the back half of the innings, particularly the last 10 overs.

"For Mitch and I to leave us hanging like that was disappointing. It probably cost us 30 or 40 runs towards the end there.

"I played a poor shot at the wrong time. If I had've gone a little bit deeper and go us to the 41st or 42nd over with Mitch, two set batters makes a huge difference at the end."

The 2015 World Cup champions have lost 14 of their past 21 completed matches and Finch attributes the side's batting woes to that slump.

"There is only so much talk you can do about ways you can improve your team and rectifying the mistakes we've made consistently over the last 18 months," he said.

"(It's about) making sure that when the game is there to be taken on, you don't second guess yourself. You commit to it 100 per cent.

"That's really it; the execution isn't always the main issue. It's sometimes the thought process.

"It's time to just do it a bit more often."

Josh Hazlewood (virus) has been sent home to Sydney and ruled out of Friday's game, with squad member Jhye Richardson in line for an ODI debut.

Wicketkeeper Alex Carey has been added to the squad to cover for Tim Paine (gastro) in a further disruption to the squad.

"(There is always instability) any time your first choice guys are unavailable or crook, we've seen it all throughout the summer from both teams, there's been quite a lot of illness, which is strange," Finch said.
