Fiona Lowry has won this year's Archibald Prize for her portrait of architect Penelope Seidler.

The $75,000 award was announced on Friday at the Art Gallery of NSW.

Among the 54 finalists were Alan Jones's portrait of AFL footballer Adam Goodes, Sophie Hewson's depiction of herself kissing singer Missy Higgins and Tim Maguire's double portrait of actress Cate Blanchett.

The people's choice award will be announced on September 11.
Tim Storrier, the 2012 Archibald Prize winner, has already secured this year's packing room prize for his portrait of Sir Les Patterson.

Sydney-based female artist Del Kathryn Barton took out last year's Archibald Prize for her portrait of actor Hugo Weaving.

The Archibald exhibition opens to the public on Saturday.
