Firefighters are working to contain a bushfire in Nowergup, on Perth's northern fringe, where an emergency warning has been downgraded.

A watch and act warning remains in place for homes on Carabooda Road and south to Hester Avenue, Wanneroo Road and east to Perry Road, in Nowergup and the western part of Pinjar in the City of Wanneroo.

"The alert level for this fire has been downgraded as the fire will be contained shortly," according to a DFES statement.

The fire may still pose a threat to homes and lives as it approaches Old Yanchep Road within the next two hours.

The fire started south of Wesco Road and west of Hopkins Road about 2.20pm.

It is now burning in forest on both sides of Wesco Road towards Old Yanchep Road.

The fire front is 600 metres long and has burned around 90 hectares.
