Firefighters battling a large factory blaze in Sydney's southwest are having to cope with large chemical explosions.

About 100 firefighters have the fire under control at the industrial site in Revesby but authorities say they are also having water supply problems.

"Every time the water goes down, the fire flares up," Fire & Rescue NSW Commissioner Greg Mullins said on Friday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to Marigold Street shortly after 11am, with black smoke billowing from the site.

Mr Mullins said there were concerns about some flammable liquids including paint thinners, which were causing explosions.

The fire was expected to burn for several hours.

Two people have been treated for smoke inhalation.

Up to 100 people were evacuated from two buildings when the blaze broke out.
