Fire leaves Vic power station low on coal

Fire has cut the power supply to one of Victoria's largest power stations, but its owner says supply to the state is not under threat.

One of Victoria's largest power stations is down to two of its eight generators after fire cut power to its mine, but supply is not believed to be under threat.

Hazelwood power station has been unable to operate its coal dredgers or conveyor lines since bushfires burning in the Latrobe Valley brought down SP AusNet power lines on Sunday night.

It is now reliant on existing stores of coal to provide power to the state.

Owner GDF Suez Australian Energy says the state's other power stations have ample capacity to cover any reduced operations.

This will be aided by the cool change, which will reduce pressure on the electricity grid, company spokesman Trevor Rowe said.

"Late yesterday afternoon fire burnt through a power supply line that's operated by SP AusNet and that took out the power into the mine," Mr Rowe told AAP.

"We haven't been able to operate our coal dredgers and conveyor lines ... that meant we couldn't dig coal.

"Overnight the coal stored was used so we're down to two of the eight generating units and they're operating at reduced levels."

Hazelwood supplies up to 25 per cent of Victoria's power.

Mr Rowe said workers had cobbled together a temporary power supply that will enable the station to operate one coal dredger.

He said a fire burning in one part of Hazelwood's open-cut mine was not a threat to the power station or the part of the mine where coal is being sourced.

"It got into a worked-out area of the mine - an old part of the mine - that is well far away from the power station," Mr Rowe said.
