The serious threat of bushfires along the south of Australia continues as the country heads into the New Year.

Authorities are urging people along Victoria's Surf Coast to evacuate over fears an active bushfire may flare up in extreme conditions.

Severe fire warnings are also in place in South Australia, with temperatures predicted to reach the low 40s again in the coming days.
