Firefighter burns hand in Vic unit fire

A firefighter has suffered a burnt hand and two people suffered minor smoke inhalation during a unit fire in Melbourne's north.

A firefighter has burnt his hand and two people have suffered smoke inhalation in a Melbourne unit fire.

An unattended burning candle sparked the blaze in Preston about 6.15am, causing an estimated $150,000 damage, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade said on Friday.

All four occupants of the dual occupancy residence managed a safe escape but two were treated for minor smoke inhalation.

A firefighter also sustained hand injuries caused by falling debris. He was treated by paramedics and taken to the Austin hospital.

Smoke alarms were fitted but were not operating because there were no batteries in them.
