Firefighters are slowly getting an upper hand over a bushfire burning in the Port Stephens area, north of Newcastle.

The bushfire has burnt 1931 hectares of land in Tomago, Williamtown and Raymond Terrace, with the RFS downgraded the warning from emergency to watch and act at 7.20pm on Sunday.

The large air tanker Nancy Bird has been assisting crews to help combat the fire which continues to burn near homes on Wade Close at Campvale.
The strong southerly winds have pushed the fire north of Newcastle Airport with the winds expected to continue into the evening, the RFS says.

Residents of the nearby town of Medowie have also been warned to monitor conditions and be aware of falling ash and embers in the area.

"Southerly winds are going to get quite strong into the evening," an RFS spokesman told AAP on Sunday.

The fire has forced the closure of Newcastle Airport.

Residents are urged to monitor the situation, prepare their bushfire survival plan and take advice from firefighters on the ground.
