Fires burn out of control across NSW

Dozens of properties could be damaged or destroyed as almost 100 fires burn across NSW, with at least 30 burning out of control.

Dozens of properties could be damaged or destroyed and at least one person has been treated for burns after almost 100 fires burned across NSW.

An emergency warning remained in place for a blaze near Mudgee late on Sunday night, but previously out-of-control fires near Boggabri, Port Macquarie, Dondingalong and Dunedoo had been downgraded.

RFS commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said earlier in the afternoon hundreds of firefighters were battling the fires out of a pool of about 2500.

"This is the worst day we've seen in the history of NSW when it comes to fire danger ratings and fire danger conditions," Mr Fitzsimmons told reporters.

Dozens of properties were threatened near Dunedoo where the blaze stretched over tens of kilometres, Mr Fitzsimmons said, and there may have been one home lost in Boggabri.

Assessment teams will inspect affected areas on Monday to learn how many properties have been damaged, the RFS tweeted on Sunday night.

One firefighter was treated for burns and others sustained minor injuries, deputy RFS commissioner Rob Rogers told the ABC.

Meanwhile three people were charged with lighting fires at Mango Creek on the Central Coast, at Orange and at Nabiac on the north coast.

The fire danger will remain very high on Monday in the Greater Hunter and surrounding fire areas, Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Neil Fraser told AAP.

But he said no part of the state would face severe, extreme or catastrophic conditions.

"The ratings are dropping right away with the cooler air coming across," Mr Fraser said.

"The only part of the state still in the 30s is the northern inland areas."

There will be a total fire ban on Monday in the North Western fire area only.
