Firms urged to get ready for SuperStream

The ATO is urging firms to make the necessary arrangements to make use of a new electronic system for superannuation payments.

The Australian Taxation Office is urging businesses to get ready for a new, simpler system to pay their staff's superannuation contributions.

From July 1, businesses can opt in to use SuperStream, an electronic payments system that treats all super contributions in the same way, whether default or choice fund, or a self-managed fund.

ATO national program manager for SuperStream Philip Hind said the new system would reduce costs and eliminate the complexity that has crept in over recent years.

He said the 2010 Cooper Review of superannuation found existing processes made poor use of technology and there was no consistency in the data required to deal with contributions.

"SuperStream is one of the most significant improvements to the compulsory superannuation system since its inception 20 years ago," Mr Hind said in a statement on Tuesday.

Firms with 20 or more staff will have to prepare for the change now, but those with 19 or fewer have another year before having to start by July 1, 2015.
