First cabinet meeting for WA McGowan govt

WA Premier Mark McGowan will meet with his full cabinet on Monday where they will become privy to the state's finances, which he says he will be open about.

The West Australian Labor party are set to have their first full cabinet meeting to understand what lies ahead for them in government.

Premier Mark McGowan said his team would be briefed by Treasury and the Department of Premier and Cabinet on Monday, where they will be privy to the state's dire finances.

Budgets forecasts during the election campaign projected a $535 million state deficit and $41.1 billion of debt in 2019/20, but Mr McGowan said the figures wouldn't prevent key promises being kept.

"We are going to deliver on our commitments, but clearly we will have a full briefing from Treasury and we will be open about the finances in coming weeks," he said.

"I want to make sure we run a transparent, accountable government that is characterised by decency, and ministers and members who behave properly."

The new Labor government includes Ben Wyatt, who has made history as Australia's first indigenous treasurer, Deputy Premier Roger Cook and Attorney-General John Quigley.

The 17-member cabinet was officially sworn in on Friday by WA governor Kerry Sanderson.

Mr McGowan, who led his party to win 41 seats of the 59-seat parliament, admitted his celebrations were short-lived as his focus turned to the job ahead.

"There's so many issues to resolved," he said.

"There's so many, and there's only so many hours in the day."

Mr McGowan will travel to Sydney this week for the first time as WA premier, to attend a meeting with the prime minister, other state leaders and the Chinese premier.
