A motorcyclist is the first person to die on Victorian roads in 2016.

The man lost control in Nunawading just after 8.30pm and veered into a tree, police believe.

He died at the scene and the cause of the crash is yet to be determined.

Victoria's last road death in 2015 was a 19-year-old man who was killed when a car driven by a learner left the road and overturned at Mount Mercer, south of Ballarat, about 8pm on Thursday.

Four people aged between 18 and 23 were also injured.

The five were heading to New Year's Eve celebrations in Geelong.

The driver, an 18-year-old learner driver, and another passenger were airlifted to The Alfred hospital with serious injuries and two other passengers are in Ballarat Hospital in a stable condition.

"We know that there was speed involved and there was inexperience involved," Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer told reporters on Friday.

"The vehicle had overtaken another vehicle and it over-corrected when coming back on to the right side of the road."

* The national road toll period runs from 0001 December 23, 2015, until 2359 January 3, 2016, local times.
