Newly-elected Speaker Tony Smith will face his first test as question time resumes on Tuesday.

The MP on Monday vowed to allow robust debate in parliament, after winning a Liberal Party room ballot to replace Bronwyn Bishop, who resigned over an expenses scandal.

But he warned MPs to be better behaved, saying parliament needn't be rude or loud.

Mr Smith has tried to distinguish himself from his predecessor, pledging not to attend regular party room meetings and promising to give everyone a fair go and to meet with cross-party leadership.

Mrs Bishop was criticised for being too partisan.

She continued to attend party meetings in what is supposed to be an independent role in the parliament.
