Fitzpatrick leads European Masters golf

Matthew Fitzpatrick is on course to defend his European Masters title after ending the third round two shots clear of his nearest challenger.

Defending champion Matthew Fitzpatrick has holed a 40-foot putt for birdie on the 18th to take a two-shot led into the final round of the European Masters in Switzerland.

The 24-year-old Englishman had five birdies and an eagle in a 7-under 63 for a 14-under total of 196.

France's Mike Lorenzo-Vera (64) is two shots off the pace alone in second.

Doug Ghim, the American former top-ranked amateur, had a 67 to join a five-man group sharing third on 10 under, including Ashun Wu of China who fired a second straight 65.

Matching Fitzpatrick's 63, Gavin Green of Malaysia moved to nine under, along with South African Thomas Aitken (66).

Overnight leader Hideto Tanihara of Japan is six shots behind Fitzpatrick after a 71.

Australian Scott Hend carded an even-par 70 to remain at one under in a tie for 44th.

Only two players in the top 20 failed to break par on a sun-soaked 6,848-yard course in the thin Swiss Alps air.
