Five flee blaze in Sydney's southwest

Five people have had a dramatic escape after a maintenance man kicked in their door to warn them of a fire in a discount store below them.

A maintenance man has kicked down a door to help rescue five people as a fire burned below them in Sydney's southwest.

Emergency services were called to a fire at a dollar discount store on Old Leumeah Road in Leumeah shortly before 6am on Monday.

Maintenance man "Danny" saw the flames and called the landlord who told him to evacuate people from upstairs, he told the Nine Network.

Danny raced up the units above the blaze and kicked down the door, alerting three people to the danger, who then raced to wake up two sleeping friends.

All five made it out but one woman was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
