Five kayakers have been found safe and well after an unplanned night on the Thomson River in Victoria.

The mixed group of adults, aged in their 20s to their 60s, waved down water police upstream from Cowwarr Weir near Heyfield about 7.40am on Sunday.

They had become separated from three other kayakers on the river late on Saturday afternoon.

Water Police Sergeant Mark Braun said their unplanned stay on the water overnight should be a reminder to other boaters to be properly equipped and to check the weather conditions.

"During the hot weather we see near-drownings, capsizings, broken-down vessels and unfortunately fatalities," Sgt Braun said.

"We are lucky we didn't see that today."
