Flesh-eating ulcer cases are spreading in Melbourne, with experts saying the disease is being transmitted from infected possums by mosquitoes.
The Buruli ulcer, which when left untreated chews through skin causing pain and disfigurement, is now being recorded in the Mornington and Bellarine peninsulas.
Professor of infectious diseases at the Austin Hospital, Paul Johnson, says while the disease is rare, it progresses slowly and can be treated with antibiotics.
