Floodwaters could swamp Gold Coast homes

Floodwaters will hit vulnerable low-lying homes on the northern Gold Coast soon and residents are being ordered to evacuate.

Up to 60 homes on the Gold Coast are expected to be swamped by rising floodwaters within the next three hours.

Evacuations have been ordered on the northern Gold Coast as overflow from the Albert and Logan Rivers approach the region.

Police fear floodwaters could hit residents near the northern suburbs of Stapylton and Jacobs Well around 2pm AEST and have begun door knocking residents, asking them to evacuate.

Residents are also being warned that if they don't evacuate they could risk being trapped for several days.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate says about 50 to 60 homes are affected by the evacuation order.

"It's highly likely the floodwater will be over your property (land) but may not be in your home," he told AAP.

"This may occur in the next three hours with water remaining in the area for several days, you would be left landlocked."

The evacuation order affects the following streets: Quinns Hill Road East, Rossmans Road, Wohlsen Road, Zipfs Road, Bruckner Road, Cooks Road, Rotary Park Road.

Authorities are also assessing how wide the flood impact may be.

Residents in these streets should also consider evacuating: Cowley Road, Finglas Road, Goldmine Road, Creek Street, Minka Lane and Halfway Drive.

People are being advised to go to family or friends homes on higher ground or to the Ormeau Library where an evacuation centre has been set up.

Residents in low-lying areas around Beenleigh have also been told to get out as the Albert River continues to rise toward a possible 130-year record level.

The Famous Yatala Pies shop, just off the Pacific Motorway, has been inundated with water.

"It's like a lake down there," one motorist told AAP. "It's really, really flooded."

More than 800mm of rain has fallen at Springbrook on the Gold Coast hinterland in the past two days.

About 1200 elective surgeries and outpatients appointments at Robina and Gold Coast University hospitals have been postponed but their emergency departments remain open.

The wild weather has seen six-metre waves recorded offshore on the Gold Coast, as all council beaches remained closed.
