Flower sales bloom at Sydney markets

Sydney florists have flocked to the flower markets as demand for bouquets are expected to double on Valentine's Day.

Roses are still the red hot favourite for this year's Valentine's Day celebration, with gerberas, tulips and lilies increasing in popularity for Sydney's less traditional lovers.

Florists flocked to Sydney's flower markets early on Friday to help spread romance across the city.

Flower growers are expecting sales to double on Friday on one of their single, busiest days of the year.

"Over the years, a beautiful bouquet of flowers is still the most popular gift of choice on Valentine's Day. Flowers make you feel special and will usually be the talk of the office," Sydney Markets CEO Brad Latham said.

Red roses are widely recognised as the symbol of love and romance, and the Sydney Markets have ensured their supply - sourced from India, Kenya and Colombia - are ample for the day's demand.

The flower markets also pumped up supply for gerberas, tulips and lilies.
