Flu claims eighth Vic aged care resident

The flu has killed an eighth resident at a regional Victorian nursing home, where another five remain under quarantine.

Another elderly resident from a regional Victorian nursing home has died from the flu, bringing the total to eight.

The person died at St John's Retirement Village in Wangaratta, where seven other residents died in the fortnight up to August 30, and five more residents remain under quarantine.

The health department was notified of the death on Monday but would not release details on the age or the gender of the elderly resident.

"The health and welfare of all our residents remains our priority and we continue to keep all families updated as the situation continues," Bishop John Parkes said in a statement.

A further 123 residents and staff were left ill following the influenza A outbreak at the home.

Bishop Parkes says an infection control consultant will remain at the village to make sure the home follows all state health procedures.

This year there have been more than 11,800 confirmed cases of the flu in Victoria and outbreaks were at "very high levels", the health department says.

"If you are sick you should avoid visiting loved ones in an aged care facility or hospital," Victorian chief health officer Dr Brett Sutton said.

The latest death comes after six residents died of flu at Uniting Agewell's facility at Strathdevon in Tasmania between August 9 and 16.

Federal health minister Greg Hunt announced on Sunday all aged care workers would get a mandatory flu jab in time for winter next year.
