Footy director Walsh quits AFL's Magpies

Collingwood director of football Geoff Walsh has announced he is leaving the AFL club.

Collingwood director of football Geoff Walsh has told the AFL club he's leaving.

In a shock move, less than seven weeks out from finals, Walsh - who has spent seven years with the Magpies - told staff and players of his decision on Wednesday, saying he wanted an extended break.

He will continue to act as a consultant and work with football personnel during a three-month notice period.

Football and coaching strategist Rodney Eade will oversee the day-to-day running of the football department on an interim basis, the Magpies said.

"I've got misgivings about leaving," Walsh said in a statement.

"Collingwood is a wonderful place to work.

"I've made some lifelong friends in my time and I'm certain that with (coach Nathan Buckley) and the many other good key people in place, the club is preparing for another period of success.

"But it's the right time personally and professionally for an extended break."

Magpies president Eddie McGuire praised Walsh as a key architect of Collingwood's 2010 premiership.

"He leaves the football department in great shape, which is a testimony to his professionalism and skill," McGuire said.
