Foreign aid cuts in the budget

Foreign aid now at its lowest level - 22 cents in every $100 of national income.

WHERE THE FOREIGN AID CUTS FELL

* Foreign aid cut by another $224 million in 2016-17 bringing total aid budget to $3.8 billion.

* Aid now at lowest level - 22 cents in every $100 of national income.

* But aid budget to increase gradually from 2017-18 onwards and will be at $4.1 billion by 2019-2020.

* Indonesia's aid budget of $296 million cops a five per cent ($15 million) cut in 2016-17, on top of the 40 per cent cut the previous year.

* Other savings made through tweaking timing of payments to various global institutions.

* Cambodia and Papua New Guinea escape aid cuts despite failed refugee resettlement deal and closure of immigration detention centre on Manus Island.
